A direct road connection links the airport to the city, and the journey typically takes 15–30 minutes depending on traffic. The distance is short, but Marrakesh traffic can add time during peak hours.
How Large Is the Airport and What Is Its Capacity?
Marrakesh Menara Airport is a single-terminal airport. All arrivals and departures happen in one building, which means you never have to navigate between separate terminals. The airport is compact and easy to walk through, although exact capacity figures and the number of gates are not necessary for practical trip planning. What matters is that the single-terminal design keeps the experience straightforward.

One Airport, One Terminal: Navigating the Facilities
Understanding the terminal layout helps you move through the airport quickly, whether you are landing or departing.
Arrivals Level: What Happens After Landing
When your flight lands, you will follow the signs to the baggage claim hall. After collecting your luggage, you will pass through customs if you have goods to declare. Once you exit into the arrivals hall, you will find the airport’s transport options outside the building, along with currency exchange desks and ATMs. Taxis are available from the official queue just outside the terminal, and the Airport bus stop (Bus 19) is located nearby.
Departures Level: Check-In and Security Flow
On the departure side, you will find check-in counters, security screening, and passport control for international flights. The terminal is compact, so once you clear security you will enter a departure lounge that includes duty-free shops, food outlets, and waiting areas. Because the airport is small, the flow from check-in to boarding is straightforward, but queues can build up during peak times.

Taxi vs. Private Transfer vs. Bus: A Comparison
| Option | Cost | Journey Time | Convenience | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official taxi | Fixed rate of 100 MAD to the Medina | 15–30 minutes | Door-to-door, fixed price | Small groups, late arrivals |
| Private transfer | Pre-booked, typically 150–250 MAD | 15–30 minutes | Pre-booked, meets you at arrivals | Families, travellers with luggage |
| Local bus | Bus 19, cheapest option | Longer than a taxi, with stops | Requires walking to the bus stop | Budget travellers, daytime arrivals |
Quick Answer: The fastest and most convenient way to get from Marrakesh airport to the city centre is by taxi or private transfer, both taking about 15–30 minutes. A taxi to the Medina costs a fixed 100 MAD, while private transfers typically range from 150 to 250 MAD. The local bus (Bus 19) is the cheapest option but takes longer and requires a short walk.
Some hotels near the airport offer shuttle services, so check with your accommodation before you travel. This can be a convenient option if your hotel provides it.
How Long Does the Journey Take?
The distance from Marrakesh airport to the city centre is short, but the actual journey time depends heavily on traffic. A taxi or private transfer typically takes 15–30 minutes. The official taxi fare is a fixed 100 MAD to the Medina, so you do not need to negotiate the price with the driver. The Bus 19 can take longer because it makes stops along the way. If you are heading to the Medina, the old walled city, factor in extra time for the narrow streets and traffic near the main square.
What to Expect Inside: Services, Amenities, and Essentials
Inside the terminal, you will find the following services and amenities to prepare for your arrival or departure.
Money Exchange and ATMs: What to Know Before You Land
You will find currency exchange desks and ATMs in the arrivals hall. It is a good idea to have some local currency on hand for your taxi or bus fare, as not all drivers accept cards. Whether you exchange at the airport or in the city is a personal choice, but having a small amount of cash before you leave the airport is always sensible.
Duty-Free, Food, and Waiting Areas
The departure lounge offers duty-free shopping, food outlets, and waiting areas. For a smaller airport, the options are sufficient but not extensive. If you are hungry after a long flight, you will find something to eat, but do not expect a wide variety of restaurants.
Connectivity and Luggage Services
Wi-Fi is available in the terminal, and you will find charging points in the waiting areas. Luggage storage and wrapping services may be limited or unavailable at this airport, so check with the airport information desk or your airline if you need these services. Parking is available at the airport for those arriving by car, and car rental counters are also available for those who prefer to drive themselves.
Departure Day: Planning Your Exit from RAK
A little planning on departure day saves you a lot of stress at the airport.
How Early Should You Arrive?
A general guideline is to arrive at least two hours before an international departure. The airport is small, but it can be busy at peak times, and security queues can build up. Arriving early gives you time to check in, drop off baggage, and clear security without rushing.
The Step-by-Step Departure Checklist
- Check in online (if available) to save time at the airport.
- Arrive at the airport at the recommended time.
- Use the check-in counters if you have baggage to drop off.
- Proceed through security screening.
- Pass through passport control if travelling internationally.
- Enter the departure lounge and locate your gate.
- Wait for boarding to be announced and queue at the gate.
Common Departure Pitfalls to Avoid
The most common mistakes are arriving too late, forgetting to check visa requirements, and underestimating security queues. Check your flight status on the departure board before you leave for the airport, and make sure your travel documents are in order. If you are flying internationally, confirm whether you need a visa for your destination well in advance.
