The Complete Answer: Where to Eat at Marrakech Airport (Menara RAK)
Savor authentic Moroccan cuisine before clearing security at the main terminal entrance. Marrakech Menara Airport, also known as RAK, is the main international gateway to Marrakech. It’s a relatively compact airport with a single main terminal building, which makes navigating the dining options straightforward. The airport serves millions of passengers each year, and the food offerings have expanded to meet the needs of both leisure travelers and business passengers.
Definition: Airside refers to the area after security checkpoints, where you’ll find your departure gates. Landside refers to the public area before security, accessible to anyone entering the airport.
What to Expect: Terminal Layout and Dining Zones
The airport is divided into two main zones for dining purposes:
- Landside (before security): This area includes the arrivals hall and the public departures area. It’s accessible to everyone, including people dropping off or picking up passengers. Here you’ll find cafés, snack bars, and some sit-down restaurants.
- Airside (after security): Once you pass through the security checkpoint, you enter the departure lounge. This area has additional dining options closer to the gates, designed for travelers who want to eat without leaving the secured zone.
The airport is located approximately 6 km from the city center, so many travelers arrive with time to spare—which makes the landside options attractive for those who don’t want to rush.
Grab a fast bite and stay close to your gate after passing through security.
Categories of Restaurants Available
At Marrakech Menara Airport, you’ll find three broad categories of food options:
- Moroccan restaurants and cafés serving traditional dishes like tagine, couscous, and pastries.
- International fast food and casual dining for familiar burgers, pizza, and sandwiches.
- Coffee shops and bakeries for quick snacks, pastries, and beverages.
The exact brands and outlets can change over time, so it’s always wise to check the airport’s official website or ask at the information desk for current listings.
Pre-Security vs Post-Security Dining: Which One to Choose?
The decision between eating before or after security is one of the most important choices you’ll make at the airport. Each option has distinct advantages and disadvantages.
Pre-Security Cafés and Snacks for Travelers with Time to Spare
Eating landside (before security) is the right choice if:
- You’ve arrived at the airport early and have plenty of time before your flight.
- You’re meeting someone or saying goodbye to someone and want to share a meal.
- You want a wider variety of options, as the landside area often has more establishments.
- You’re not traveling with checked luggage and can easily move through security later.
The advantage of eating before security is that you’re not tied to your gate. You can linger over a meal, take your time, and then proceed through security when you’re ready. The downside is that you’ll need to factor in the time to go through security and walk to your gate afterward.
Post-Security Restaurants for Those Who Want to Maximize Time Near the Gate
Eating airside (after security) is the smarter choice if:
- Your flight is scheduled to board soon.
- You want to avoid the risk of getting stuck in a long security line after your meal.
- You prefer to relax near your gate with a drink or snack while waiting.
- You have a layover and want to stay within the secured area.
The main advantage of eating after security is that once you’re through, you don’t need to worry about missing your flight. You can eat, shop, and relax in the departure lounge without the stress of another checkpoint.
Quick Answer: Choose pre-security dining if you have 2+ hours before your flight and want more variety. Choose post-security dining if you’re short on time or prefer to stay close to your gate after clearing security.
A Taste of Morocco: Traditional Dishes Available at the Airport
If you’re visiting Marrakech, you might want to sample Moroccan cuisine one last time before you leave—or get your first taste as you arrive. The airport does offer some Moroccan options, though the selection is more limited than what you’ll find in the city.
Tagines, Couscous, and Mint Tea: The Classics
Traditional Moroccan dishes like tagine—a slow-cooked stew in a clay pot—and couscous are sometimes available at airport restaurants. These are typically served in sit-down restaurants rather than at snack bars. Mint tea, Morocco’s signature beverage, is more widely available and can be found at many cafés throughout the airport. The quality of these dishes can be hit or miss. Airport kitchens often prepare food in large batches, which can affect the freshness and flavor compared to a dedicated restaurant in the medina. However, for travelers who want a taste of Morocco without leaving the airport, these options are worth trying.
Quick Moroccan Snacks: Pastries and Sandwiches
For a lighter option, look for Moroccan pastries such as briouates (filled pastry triangles) or msemen (flatbread). These are often available at bakery counters and snack stands. Sandwiches with Moroccan flavors—such as those with chicken, olive, and preserved lemon—can also be found. These quick snacks are ideal for travelers who don’t have time for a full sit-down meal but still want to experience local flavors.
Quick Answer: Yes, you can find Moroccan food at Marrakech airport, including tagine, couscous, and mint tea. The selection is smaller than in the city, and quality varies, but it’s a convenient way to enjoy local cuisine before or after your flight.
International Options and Familiar Chains
Not everyone wants Moroccan food, especially on a long travel day. Fortunately, Marrakech Menara Airport also offers international options that provide familiar flavors and consistent quality.
Burgers, Pizza, and Fast Food
For travelers seeking quick, recognizable meals, the airport has fast food outlets serving burgers, pizza, and other casual fare. These are typically located in the departure lounge, making them convenient for travelers who want to eat quickly before boarding. Fast food at the airport is a good choice when you’re short on time because the service is usually quick and the food is ready to eat. The downside is that prices are typically higher than at similar restaurants in the city.
Coffee Shops and Bakeries
Coffee shops are scattered throughout the airport, both before and after security. These are perfect for grabbing an espresso or cappuccino, a pastry, or a light sandwich. Bakeries and coffee stands are often the busiest spots in the morning, as travelers grab breakfast on the go. If you’re looking for a comfortable place to sit and work or relax, a coffee shop is a solid choice. Many offer free Wi-Fi, which is useful for checking flight updates or catching up on emails.

Here are some practical tips to make your airport dining experience smoother.
Budget, Payment, and Currency Considerations

If you’re on a tight budget, consider eating before you arrive at the airport or packing snacks for the flight. Most airport restaurants and cafés accept major credit cards and mobile payments. Cash in Moroccan dirhams is also widely accepted, but you may want to keep smaller bills for quicker transactions at snack counters.
Avoiding Crowds and Long Lines
The airport gets busiest during peak travel times, typically early morning and late afternoon. If you want to avoid long lines at restaurants, try to eat during off-peak hours—between 10 AM and 12 PM, or after 3 PM. During busy periods, you might find that some restaurants have long queues. In that case, look for a less popular spot with a shorter line, or consider ordering a quick takeaway item from a coffee shop instead of waiting for a full meal.
